General Information about MAD Planar Magnetic Speaker Arrays

"It was hard to believe that such a small amount of speakers could

produce a quality unlike any cluster of speakers I have seen and heard."

-  Keith DeVerna, Production Coordinator, 'Broadway on Broadway'.

The 'Broadway on Broadway' musical event in Times Square was attended by approximately 70,000 people.  The sound was clear and full for several blocks from the main stage.  The MAD planar surface array was quickly and easily flown and it sounded fantastic from the moment it was turned on.

"When we heard the HPV panel array, we were stunned."

-  Tim Higgins, AV Services Manager, ARCO Arena.

The ARCO Arena in Sacramento seats nearly 18,000 people and the sound is provided by four MAD planar magnetic speaker arrays - one at each corner of the main scoreboard.

360 degree coverage by the four planar arrays delivers crisp, intelligible speech and music to every seat in the house.  Nearly all facilities are smaller and less challenging than this, so you have no worries about delivering the level of sound you need in any venue.

To the left is a single planar magnetic speaker.  Each planar magnetic speaker is only 3/4" deep and approximately 6" wide by 9" tall.  These speakers are used to build planar magnetic speaker arrays like the ones shown below.  Planar magnetic speaker arrays evenly and uniformly distribute sound in any shaped facility.  With the appropriate design and engineering, we can install a system that will be perfect for your needs.

This is a front view of a MAD planar magnetic speaker (also shown above in a side view photo).  They are appromixately 6 inches wide and 9 inches tall.  This small, compact form factor allows planar magnetic arrays to meet the audience coverage needs of any venue.  By using many small speakers precisely aligned horizontally and vertically in an array, each seat in the house hears crystal clear sound.  The exceptional directivity greatly reduces reflections and reverberations off of walls and ceilings and makes the listening experience more enjoyable for everyone.

MAD planar transducers come pre-assembled into line arrays or surface arrays.  MAD line arrays consist of just a few transducers in each row, while surface arrays consist of 8, 9 or 12 transducers in each row.  Line arrays are directional arrays while surface arrays offer wider horizontal coverage.

The MTM-1 Planar Magnetic Line Array (left photo) delivers ultra-fast transient response, pristine vocal intelligibility, and uniform audience coverage.  Accurate reproduction is due to the large surface area of the transducers, which are driven uniformly and accurately inside the powerful planar magnetic field.

Most tweeters, for example, are about the size of a dime or nickle.  The PT3 tweeter is 30 about 20 times larger than most tweeters and it needs no horns to direct the sound it creates.

MTM-1 Planar Magnetic Line Arrays are easily configurable for varying degrees of vertical coverage by the use of an integrated cam system.  Flying bars and pullback bars enable fixed installation and proper positioning of the array for desired audience coverage.   The arrarys are ultracompact and ultra lightweight offering a power-to-weight ratio that leads the industry.

The MTM-1 (of which 6 are shown to the left) have two MAD-1 planar magnetic drivers on the outside and one PT3 planar magnetic tweeter in the middle.  Coverage is smooth and even in both the horizontal and vertical axes.

SB-112C Cardioid Subwoofer Line Arrays (left photo) masterfully deliver lower frequencies in a true cardioid pattern. The trapezoidal enclosure combined with the internal passive sound absorption system enable you to direct low frequencies exactly where you want them.

Both the MTM-1 and SB-112C Arrays are compact, lightweight line arrays which require minimal manpower to configure into arrays and install.

This enclosure design delivers tight, controlled, well-defined low freqencies - both percussive and sinusoidal.  Whether you are producing kick drums, bass guitars, cellos, tympani, or synthesized bass, you will enjoy clear and faithful low-frequency reproduction.

In live demonstrations, we frequently hear that the MAD SB-112C delivers more bass than conventional 18" subwoofers and that it sounds tighter, cleaner, more accurate, and richer.

The SB-112C is one of the best professional subwoofers for price.

To the left is a photograph from an outdoor planar magentic speaker array demonstration which was done in California.  This single array is equalent to half the system that powers Sacramento's ARCO arena mentioned above.  There are sixteen MAD A9 "ribs" visible in this photograph.  The ribs go from left to right and they are stacked one on top of the other.  There are a total of 144 MAD transducers in this photograph.

Arrays like deliver incredible acoustic output, yet they are small and compact.  This array can be easily packed into a midsized van for transport and then quickly flown overhead a stage for live events.

For larger venues, MAD planar magnetic arrays can be installed permanently in an auditorium, arena, performing arts center, concert hall, sanctuary, worship center, gymnasium, grand ballroom, or other large facility.
